Zamfara Peaceful Primaries Earn Praise as NIMOV Hails Political Maturity

The Northern Nigerian Election Monitoring Volunteers has praised political leaders and residents of Zamfara State for what it described as a peaceful and mature conduct during the rescheduled State Assembly primary elections for Maradun I and II constituencies held on Sunday.

In a statement issued after monitoring the exercise, the Zamfara State Coordinator of NIMOV, Dr Mu’azu Na’allah Moriki, said the calm atmosphere witnessed across Maradun marked a sharp contrast to the violence and tension that often characterise party primaries in parts of the country.

Moriki noted that party supporters, stakeholders, and residents conducted themselves responsibly throughout the exercise, describing the development as a sign of growing democratic awareness and commitment to credible political processes.

He particularly commended supporters of the All Progressives Congress for what he called their loyalty and discipline during the primaries, attributing the peaceful conduct to confidence in the party’s leadership under the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, and the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal.

The election monitoring group also alleged that some political actors attempted to disrupt the process through acts capable of causing chaos and violence, but said residents and party faithful resisted provocation and remained orderly.

According to NIMOV, voters and supporters turned out massively across wards in the local government to support their preferred candidates without incidents of violence or rancour.

The organisation said the successful conduct of the primaries has boosted public confidence in democratic participation in Zamfara and could serve as a model for future political exercises in the state.

NIMOV congratulated the winners of the primaries and urged them to be magnanimous in victory by embracing their opponents to promote unity, reconciliation, and political stability ahead of future elections.
