Kaduna Majority Leader Champions Girl-Child Education, Calls for Greater Female Representation in Politics

By Uangbaoje Alex, Kaduna

The Majority Leader of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Munira Suleiman Tanimu, has called for increased female participation in politics and governance, highlighting the persistent challenges women face in male-dominated political spaces. She made the call during a one-day capacity-building workshop organized for women elected and appointed in Kaduna State.

The event, which was the first of its kind in the state, was themed “Leading with Impact for the Kaduna State Elected Female Officials on Inclusive and Transformational Governance” and was organized by the Office of the Majority Leader.

Speaking at the workshop, Hon. Tanimu expressed concern over the continued underrepresentation of women in political offices, especially in northern Nigeria.

“It is so sad that women are still underrated in the political profession,” she said. “Despite all the dialogue and discussions, we’re still not there yet. I’m the only female representative in the Kaduna State House of Assembly and the entire northwest Nigeria.”

She emphasized that the lack of female voices in legislative houses slows down the passage of bills that affect women and children, noting that broader representation would speed up progress on such critical issues.

Reflecting on her journey, Tanimu revealed that she had to contest three times before she was finally elected, attributing her success to perseverance and determination.

“A lot of women try once and back off. But with consistency and determination, they’ll get there someday,” she said.

She also reiterated her commitment to promoting girl-child education, which she described as the cornerstone of female empowerment and political inclusion.

“If I wasn’t educated, I wouldn’t be here today. Education is a huge key to success,” she said.

Tanimu cited financial barriers, societal expectations, and lack of support as key challenges preventing women from entering politics. She stressed the importance of being mentally, emotionally, and financially prepared to engage in public service.

Highlighting the significance of the workshop, she stated that the goal was to raise awareness and build capacity among women in leadership roles—from councillors and local government chairpersons to vice chairpersons and deputies.

“We cannot do it alone. This is about uniting women leaders, sharing experiences, and preparing the next generation to lead,” she said.

Tanimu expressed appreciation to Governor Uba Sani, the Speaker of the House, and her husband for their unwavering support in her political journey.

“We are not here to challenge men. We are here to complement their efforts, to bring new perspectives, and to help where needed,” she added.

Earlier in her remarks, Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, while commending the Majority Leader, noted that commitment to empower women in governance demonstrates exemplary leadership.

“When women are equipped to excel in public service, our entire state benefits from more inclusive and effective governance. This initiative will, undoubtedly, strengthen our democracy and advances our collective vision for a more equitable Kaduna State where leadership talent is recognized and nurtured regardless of gender.” She said.

On his part, Speaker of House, Rt Hon. Aminu Liman, said the empowerment will not only unite the women, it will also create awareness, and encouragement for women in politics and public positions.

“As you are well aware, not only is she the Majority Leader, but she is also a very impactful, courageous, and supportive person to the House.

“That is why she initiated this program, to invite not only the councillors but also the appointees of the entire state, to see how they can harmonize and encourage more women to be part of political activities. The goal is to harness their potential and see how they can take the state to another milestone,” Liman added.

The workshop marks a pivotal moment in Kaduna State’s push for inclusive governance and aims to inspire more women across the region to pursue political leadership.
