Gunmen Abduct 40 Female Farmers In Zamfara

No fewer than 40 women of various age groups were yesterday kidnapped by gunmen in some communities inMaru local government area of Zamfara State.

It was gathered that the women, numbering about fifty, were threshing grains in a large farm in Matankari village under Dansadau emirate.

An eyewitness, who spoke through a telephone, said the gunmen numbering about forty attacked the unsuspecting women when they were busy working on the farm and forcefully led them into the jungle.

He said some of the women were carried on motorcycles and others on camels and donkeys.

Some others who were left around were helplessly wailing in agony, just as the gunmen kept shooting indiscriminately to scare people away.

He said some of the women were later released by the abductors, but a sizeable number of them were still in captivity, adding that most of them were old women of between ages of 45-60.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the village are currently in dilemma and fear of insecurity challenge,there is no presence of security operatives in the troubled area.

The state commissioner of Police, Mr Shaba Alkali, who confirmed the attack, said 35 women were kidnapped and his command is making every effort to rescue the rest of the captives.

It will recalled that recently, more than forty peasant farmers were abducted by gunmen from the same Emirate area, but were later released in exchange for a large number of cows earlier recovered from them in a military operation.
