Supreme Court halts ongoing constitution amendment
Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Federal Government and the National Assembly to maintain the status quo in the ongoing amendment of the 1999
Constitution.
By this ruling, the court has put a
stop to the ongoing amendment of
the constitution by the National Assembly.
This is after billions of naira had been
expended on the exercise. Last year alone, it was estimated the National Assembly spent about N1billion for the exercise.
The Supreme Court on Thursday gave
its ruling sequel to a suit brought by
the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice,
Mohammed Adoke, against the
National Assembly.
This was after President Goodluck Jonathan objected to the amendment of the constitution sent to him by the National Assembly for assent.
Adoke had on April 23 instituted the suit at the Supreme Court.
