Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, representing Kaduna North Senatorial Zone has urged state governments across the country to allow the people to take charge of the political parties structure in their respective states in order for the nation to experience true democracy.

Hunkuyi, said one of the major problem that has bedeviled the nation’s democratic structure is the way and manner state governors are holding on to party control, thereby making it difficult for the ordinary member of the party to participate in decision making.

He made this known on Wednesday, in his remarks at the National Colloquium on Election, Corruption and Roadmap to 2019, organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kaduna State Council in collaboration with Pax-Community Partnership Project (.

He added that there no way the country can think of democratic success without addressing the issues affecting the political parties, saying, “until we put are political parties in order we can not achieve true democracy”.

The Senator, also urged the political class to go back to the days of former President Shehu Shagari, where a sitting President will have to sit down and wait the party chairman before any meeting would take place, unlike what is now obtained where party structure is now being controlled from the government houses.

He therefore, charged the media to sit-up and challenge the system to put both the Executives, Legislatures and Judiciary in check so as to have a vibrant democracy.

Hunkuyi, who was represented at the occasion by Dr. Abdulraman Usman, also said another problem facing democracy in Nigeria is voters ignorance, this he noted can not be solved by legislation.

In his submission, National President of the NUJ, Comrade Abdulwaheed Odusile, laments that a situation where individuals are allowed to fund political parties, will be very difficult for true democracy to thrive.

He charged political parties to put their houses in order, saying, ” today we have candidates who are above the party. Because they the party, they have become more powerful than the party structure.

Odusile, warned journalists to be very mindful of what they say and write as the country prepares for 2019 election in order not to fall into the hands of selfish politicians who are ready to do anything to bring their opposition down.

He condemned the action of the Nasarawa state government for demolishing a media house for no reason, adding that the NUJ will not accept any form of intimidation against journalists in Nigeria.
