Resource to Transform Nigeria Resides in Women – Activist
By ALEX UANGBAOJE, Kaduna
The Founder, Women for Sustainable Environment, Mrs. Olanike Olugboji, has challenged women in Northern Nigeria to wake up and begin to aspire for political offices, saying, the resources the country need to be transformed resides in women.
Mrs. Olugboji, who said this at a one day workshop for women on Wednesday in Kaduna, tagged, ‘Leadership Skills and Fund Raising Strategies’, organized by Women in Need Foundation, charged them to always present themselves whenever a leader is needed.
“It is time for you to stop look at other people whenever there is need for leaders to be appointed because every woman have leadership potential in her.
“Let’s not be waiting for anybody to bring the change that we need, we should start making that change that we want to see.
“The time has come for us to begin to start asking politicians questions whenever they come to us to promise heaven and earth. We need to get to a level where we don’t need them to give us wrappers, but ensure they create avenue for us to be able to buy wrappers for ourselves.” She said.
Speaking with journalists, organiser of the event, Barrister Biola Kamaldeen, said her organization has in the last three years preparing women in three local government areas in Kaduna State to understand leadership and the need for them to participate in politics.
“Today we are talking about leadership skills because the local government elections is around the corner and some of the women we have trained are already participating.
“Leadership requires certain skills, and today we are teaching them what it means to be a leader. People who want to say we want to step in to a new shoes, should know what the shoes look like and what it means to wear those shoes and that is what leadership is all about.
“Some shay away from leadership, that’s why today we are going to teach them what it means to be a good leader. When they are talking about leaders, you turnaround and start looking for someone else, you first look at yourself.
“And we realized that in whatever you want to do as a person, you need money and we are teaching them how to raise fund for themselves without relying on Godmothers and Godfather, in such a way that somebody will be sponsoring you.” She added.
