Reps to probe Benin Electricity Company
House of Representatives has asked its committee on power (when constituted), to interface with both the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, over failure to supply electricity to Ilaje/Eseodo, Okitipupa/Irele and Odigbo/Ileoluji – Okeibo federal constituencies of Ondo State, as well as the continued demand for payment of bills in the face of no supply.
This was the outcome of a motion brought by Hon. Kolade Akinjo titled, “Urgent Need For Intervention in the Disconnection of Electric Power Supply to Ilaje/Eseodo, Okitipupa/Irele and Odigbo/Ileoluji – Okeibo Federal constituencies of Ondo State by BEDC.”
He complained that his constituency had been grappling with blackout for the past 15 months.
The lawmaker expressed worry that the continued power outage in these areas for such a long period had brought untold hardships on the inhabitants and paralysed business activities, leaving them with no other choice than to resort to buying fuel at exorbitant prices to power their generating sets.
“The prevailing situation has adversely affected the social well-being of the people, created serious security challenge, which has led to increased crime rate. But despite the blackout, the people are still being pressured to pay electricity bills,” the lawmaker lamented.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House, which was presided over by Speaker Yakubu Dogara
