Police arrest 749 suspects in Edo


No fewer than 749 suspects have so far been arrested by operatives of Edo police command in the past seven months of intensified onslaught against crime and criminal elements in the state.

A total of 136 sophisticated arms, 34 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and 534 ammunition were recovered from them.

Three hundred and ninety of the suspects have so far been charged to court.

The Commissioner of police in Edo Mr Chris Ezike disclosed this while briefing the Inspector-General of Police Mr Solomon Arase of the command achievements since last September when he assumed duty in the state.

CP Ezike explained that the suspects included 573 cultists, 105 armed robbers and 47 kidnappers while 24 were apprehended for unlawful possession of firearms.

The commissioner however with regret informed the IGP that the command lost 26 officers including six Superintendent of Police Officers (SPOs) within the period under review.

He attributed the successes to the partnership with members of the public and the support and encouragement of the state governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“In the last seven months the Comrade Governor has made available to the command 9 (nine) Hilux vehicles, one 500KVA transformer, periodic supply of fuel to enhance operational efficiency amongst others.

“Indeed the Governor has demonstrated passion and commitment to partner/encourage us to perform our duties effectively”. CP Ezike stated.

He thanked the IGP for his outstanding leadership that has repositioned the Force for professionalism.

COMPOL Ezike told the visiting IGP that his policing strategies have led to the success stories of the Force.

He listed some of the measures to include introduction of Safer Highway Patrol in place of Road blocks, establishment of Complaint Response Unit, Post Retirement Housing Scheme, promotions and Stop the Bribe Platform.

“We promised to be apostles of your leadership and pray to God to grant you fruitful harvest as you water the farms of others.

“This visit shall no doubt galvanize and motivate us to greater services”. CP Ezike maintained.

The Inspector-General of police commended men and officers of the command for tackling crime head-on in Edo.

He assured them of improved welfare just as he warned them against hobnobbing with criminals.

“If you hobnob with cultists, criminals, you will never go far”. IGP Arase told the officers.
