MBF Rejects Northern Security Trust Fund, Threatens Legal Action Over State Contributions

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has rejected the newly established Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund (NNSTF), describing it as unacceptable to the people of the Middle Belt and warning that it will challenge the legality of state governments contributing to the initiative.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National Spokesman, Luka Binniyat, the MBF said while it supports the creation of state police and genuine efforts to tackle insecurity, it opposes the decision of Northern governors to commit what it described as huge monthly contributions to the regional security fund.
The forum argued that Middle Belt states have suffered the highest human and material losses from years of terrorism, banditry and communal violence, yet victims have received little solidarity or support from the Northern Governors’ Forum.
According to the MBF, funds earmarked for the NNSTF should instead be invested directly by each state in strengthening local security, supporting community-based intelligence, acquiring surveillance equipment, improving emergency response systems and rebuilding communities devastated by violence.
The group also called for greater investment in the rehabilitation of schools and hospitals, compensation for victims, and the resettlement of thousands of internally displaced persons.
The MBF further alleged that the security fund could be used in ways that may not serve the interests of victims of insecurity. It also reiterated its longstanding position that the concept of a unified Northern region is no longer valid and urged governors from Middle Belt states to withdraw from the Northern Governors’ Forum.
The forum called on governors of Middle Belt states not to contribute to the NNSTF and urged citizens across the region to oppose any state funding for the initiative.
The NNSTF was inaugurated on July 8, 2026, as a regional initiative aimed at mobilising resources to strengthen efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across Northern Nigeria. The Northern Governors’ Forum has said the fund is intended to complement existing security operations and improve regional security coordination.
