Kaduna Journalist Narrates Ordeal, as he Regains Freedom 200 Hours After‎

After an intense struggle by the National Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Kaduna State chapter, to secure the release of Jacob Onjewu Dickson of Authentic News Daily, the journalist Thursday finally regained his freedom from prison 200 hours after arrest. ‎

Jacob was arrested on Thursday following a report he wrote and published on an online medium ‘authentic news online’ a report considered as inciteful.

The embattled journalist who was allegedly detained on the order of the Kaduna State government over the said story expressed gratitude to God and his colleagues who also rallied round for his release.
Speaking on his experience in the hands of security operatives, Mr Dickson said he was treated with a high sense of professionalism all the days he was invited by the police and when he was eventually sent to prison.

“I sincerely want to thank my State chairman, the secretary, colleagues within and outside Kaduna state and other human right organizations for standing by me throughout the days l was invited and detained in prison up to today when l regained my freedom on bail.

“The story l wrote was not intended in anyway to cause disaffection in the state but l was trying to bring to the knowledge of the general public what happened,” he explained.

It will be recalled that on Thursday,  28th April, 2016, Mr Jacob Dickson was arrested by Operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Kaduna of an alleged inciting story under the caption “Governor El-Rufai stoned by angry youths in Kaduna”.

Mr Dickson who was granted bail to the sum of hundred thousand naira is to be arraigned in. Court on the 12th of this month for further hearing on his matter.

Earlier, he was charged for inciteful publication, Impersonation among others.

Meanwhile, Kaduna Council in its communique issued after an extra ordinary meeting has called on Journalists to be very cautious in the reportage to avoid a repeat of Mr Dickson experience.

The communique which was signed by the council chairman Garba Muhammad also appealed to the state government to also put the council in the knowledge of any offence committed by its members as partners in progress.
