Girl Child: UNICEF Donates Educational Materials to 5 Schools in Zamfara‎

As part of its commitment in advancing girl child education, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Monday donated teaching/learning and sports materials to set up 5 Model Girls Friendly Primary Schools in Zamfara State.

Mr. Mohammad Mohiuddin, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF, Sokoto, who handed over the materials to Alh. Muktari Muhammad Lugga, Commissioner for Education in the State said, t‎he donation is aimed at helping to achieve increased access and improve quality of learning for children in the benefiting  schools.‎

‎According to him, UNICEF is committed to deliver results for children aimed at bringing more girls to school in targeted States of northern Nigeria towards completing basic education and acquire skills for life and livelihoods (enrolment, completion, and learning).‎

Mohiuddin noted that ‎”With a total of 10.5 million children out of school, Nigeria accounts for almost one in five of all school age children living in extreme educational poverty worldwide.

“Since May 2012, UNICEF has been supporting Zamfara State towards implementation of multi-year Girls’ Education Project Phase 3 (GEP3) funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). 

‎”GEP3 aims at improving girls’ access, retention and learning in Zamfara and is implemented by State Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board, State Mass Education Board, Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), and College of Education Maru. GEP3 works closely with civil society organizations such as High Level Women Advocates (HiLWA) and FHI 360. 

“In Zamfara, GEP3 is implemented in six Local Government Areas (LGAs): Anka, Bungudu, Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Talata Mafara, and Tsafe. By the end of 2020, the project has the target of bringing 155,580 more girls into school.”

Yandoton Daji Model Primary School, Yandoto – Tsafe LGA
Sarkin Kaya Abarshi Model Primary School, Jangeru – Talata Mafara LGA
Nizzamiya Model Primary School, Anka  Anka LGA‎, are the benefiting schools.
