Family Planning Doesn’t Cause Ectopic Pregnancy – Specialist

By Alex Uangbaoje, Kaduna
Following misconception that ectopic pregnancy can be complication resulting from application of Family Planning (FP) services, an FP specialist, Tawalkatu Imran said, FP has no connection with ectopic pregnancy as such, the public should treat such information as malicious and unfounded.
Ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which the fertilised egg implants outside the uterus, and it can occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself in a place other than inside the uterus, according to expert.
Tawakaltu, an Officer in Charge of FP unit, General Hospital, Rigasa in Kaduna State, explained that, “almost all ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube and are thus sometimes called tubal pregnancies. The fallopian tubes are not designed to hold a growing embryo; thus, the fertilized egg in a tubal pregnancy cannot develop properly.”
The FP specialist, made this known when she received a team of journalists, touring health facilities being support by Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), in Kaduna State.
She noted that since NURHI, commenced her FP intervention at hospital in 2016, services has greatly improved, and that the unit now have the capacity to attend to about 400 clients monthly, as against the less than 60 clients they use to get.
“Before NURHI intervention, we were confined into one small office and people find the place very uncomfortable, but today we have two befitting offices and a toilet provided by them.
“And because of the kind of services we are providing here, the attitude of people in giving birth has drastically changed. And they get almost free services, on like what they get in private hospitals. We only collect N500 from them and they pay N4000 at the private hospitals.”
When the team visited, Primary Health Care, Mando, the Officer in Charge of FP unit, Ladi Dauda, revealed that NURHI, in November 2016, handed over complete building she renovated at the PHC to management.
According to her, NURHI had to renovate the facility because of FP unit, which was in shamble at that time. She thanked NURHI for coming to the aid of the centre, saying their touch did not only transformed the unit, but placed the entire PHC on a very stable condition.
She added that because of NURHI intervention, FP service acceptability increased with over 90%, saying, “clients flow rate was very low before they came in, but today, we receives over 270 clients per month.”
One of the client, Laraba Ayodele, who spoke with journalists, said, “I started accessing Family Planning service since 2011, after I have given birth to my fourth child and I needed to rest. So one day, when I went to Kawo General hospital for anti natal, they told me about family planning and how it can help me, immediately I started.
“Today I have seven children, and I now have control over how I give birth and am becoming healthier. I will urged every other women who are not doing it, to start for the sake of their health, and they should not be afraid because the side effect is minimal and can be treated as soon as they are detected.”
