APC Will Not Compromise Senate Presidency -Oyegun

By Chris Suleiman, Abuja

National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Wednesday said the APC will never compromise on the leadership of the Senate Presidency  even as he maintained that, the APC as a party of change cannot interfere with judicial process going on.

Chief Oyegun who was responding to question from the media at the party National Secretariat on the recent comment credited to him about sacrificing the Senate Presidency to the PDP in the event that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki lost his case at the CCT.

Responding Oyegun said  “that misunderstanding is still on? Let me put it simply. There were basically two points that I was making; Number one, as a party of change even as a party, we cannot interfere in a judicial process that is ongoing. That was clear. And when they asked about the senate, I said under no circumstance can we compromise on the leadership of the senate.

The Chairman added that, “We are the majority party and the issue doesn’t even really arise but unfortunately the way it was put, the misinterpretation has been a little bit too intense and that is clear. It just doesn’t arise at all.

He further said that, “the issue, the argument and the rest doesn’t arise. If somebody wants to theorise and postulate, that’s a different matter. It doesn’t arise.

It would be recalled that National Chairman  was quoted in some media to have said  that the  party wouldn’t mind to loose it’s no three seat to the opposition PDP.

Oyegun was said to have said,  the party is “also planning” to checkmate plans by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to take over the Senate Presidency should Bukola Saraki be removed from the position in view of his current trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT. He was  however, said to have  pointed out that in an event his party forfeits the exalted position to the PDP, that may be the sacrifice it would have to pay for Change.

Oyegun in the said interview was quoted as saying: “We don’t take anything for granted. As they (PDP) are planning, we are also planning. The situation is under control. The whole situation is unfortunate but it is real.”
