We Are Committed to Human Rights of Nigerians – Army

The Nigerian Army has assured that it is committed to institutionalising the respect for human rights of Civil-Military Cooperation in Nigeria.
Acting Commandant, Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre, Jaji, Brigadier-General Adamu Dauda gave the assurance during the closing ceremony of a five-day Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Human Rights Observance Practical Exercise (Livex) for Nigerian Armed Forces and other Security Agencies.
The Ag-Commandant said the purpose of the exercise was to boast the capacity of the officers in respecting human rights of civilians in any community they finds themselves during operation, especially in crisis situation.
”I am indeed very grateful that the aims of the exercise has been achieved, even there were challenges when we started, but at the end of the exercise they Were able to interact absolutely well with every member of the community.
“They also conduct themselves to scenerios that were painted to test their ingenuity in bringing out great ideas on how to solve unexpected situations in the field.
”The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA)Organised this exercise to train members of the arm forces and the paramilitaries agencies towards observing human rights in their obligations to the civil populace and our civil military cooperation”. The General said.
Also speaking, representative of the European Union, Colonel Marc Hunbert said the EU brought in its experience it has gained from theatres of operations all around in Civil-Military Cooperations.
“We found out that this relations is very important to the conflicts especially now, we no longer have wars between armies but with insurgency groups, terrorists etc.
“So it is very difficult to wage war in this situation because it is in the middle of the population and respecting human rights in this case is very important” he said.
One of the beneficiaries of the training exercise, a village head, Adamu Saliu, (Sarki Jaji) said his community has also benefited the military each time need them, adding that “that is why our people gave them full support during the exercise”
About one hundred and eight five (185) participants drawn from the Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, DSS and some community leaders were trained in the exercise.
