UNICEF Condemns Kebbi School Attack, Warns of Escalating Threat to Children’s Safety

UNICEF has raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation facing schoolchildren in Nigeria after a deadly attack on a Government Girls School in the Maga community of Kebbi State left the Vice-Principal dead and at least 25 students reportedly abducted.

In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, UNICEF described the incident as a “tragic reminder” of the growing dangers confronting students and teachers, warning that attacks on schools are becoming alarmingly frequent, especially in northern Nigeria.

The children’s agency said the latest assault highlights a major setback to efforts to keep education safe and accessible, stressing that every attack further erodes confidence in the school system and puts thousands more children at risk of dropping out.

“This is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and education personnel,” UNICEF said, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children. The agency extended condolences to families of the victims and wished injured individuals a quick recovery.

UNICEF expressed concern that, despite Nigeria’s 2015 endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration, attacks continue to undermine the civilian nature of schools. The agency warned that the failure to fully implement safety commitments is leaving children exposed to violence, trauma, and long-term disruption of their education.

Security experts say such incidents deepen fear among communities, force school closures, and worsen the out-of-school crisis, particularly for girls.

UNICEF urged authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable in line with national and international laws while strengthening child protection systems and reinforcing security measures around learning environments.

“No child should ever be put at risk while pursuing an education,” the statement emphasized, adding that Nigeria must urgently scale up efforts to protect its most vulnerable citizens before more tragedies occur.

This statement was signed by Sussan Akila, Communication Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria.
