A high-level United Nations delegation on Friday paid a condolence visit to the Kaduna State Government over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a transformational leader and steadfast ally of the global body.

Led by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Malik Fall, the team was received at the Government House by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe on behalf of Governor Uba Sani.

Fall said the UN honoured Buhari not only for his leadership but for his deep ties with the organisation, dating back to his early years as a peacekeeper. “We know what he represented for Nigeria, for Kaduna State, and for the United Nations,” he said, noting Buhari’s strong support for UN-led interventions, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UN envoy also revealed that Buhari’s son, Yusuf, has been working with the UN system for four years, earning praise for his humility and team spirit.

Beyond condolences, Fall reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to Kaduna’s development and hinted at a forthcoming joint mission to fast-track Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the state.

“You cannot talk about the Northwest without talking about Kaduna. We hope to deepen our joint programming and increase our footprint in this crucial region,” he said.

Deputy Governor Balarabe described the visit as a mark of true friendship and lauded the UN’s long-standing support in health, education, agriculture, humanitarian relief, and development planning.

Following the meeting, UN agencies met with state officials on youth development, health, innovation, business support, and social services. The delegation later visited Buhari’s Kaduna residence to condole with the former First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari, and the family.
