Thousands of Kaduna Pupils to Benefit as Government, Partners Expand Learning Support

By Uangbaoje Alex, Kaduna

Thousands of pupils across public primary schools in Kaduna State are set to benefit from a large-scale rollout of teaching and learning materials flagged off by the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and PLANE Programme.

The distribution, which includes hundreds of thousands of textbooks, exercise books, uniforms, school bags, sandals, sports wear and writing materials, is expected to directly support tens of thousands of learners by improving access to basic classroom tools and reducing barriers to participation in school.

Speaking at the ceremony, KADSUBEB Executive Chairman Mubarak Mohammed said the intervention is designed to improve learning outcomes by ensuring pupils have the essential materials needed to engage effectively in the classroom.

He noted that the initiative reflects the strong collaboration between UBEC and the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani, and signals a growing shift from focusing solely on infrastructure to prioritizing learning outcomes.

Also speaking, UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba, represented by Director of Academic Services Zipporah Panguru, said the intervention aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places education at the centre of national development.

She emphasized that providing learning materials helps promote equity and improves the chances of meaningful participation for children in the education system.

Development partners highlighted additional investments that are expanding the reach of the initiative.

Samuel Achimugu, Deputy National Team Lead of the PLANE programme, disclosed that PLANE has provided more than 1,033 packs of learning materials amounting to over 5,133 individual resources, alongside 1,183 English literacy teacher guides and 200 cartons of flashcards to support early-grade learning.

According to him, these materials are currently being deployed across 138 schools to help pupils transition from mother tongue instruction to English and strengthen foundational literacy.

In his goodwill message, Ezra Angai of the Reaching Out-of-School Children Project (ROOSC) revealed that the project has already distributed over 35,000 learning materials and helped reintegrate more than 15,000 previously out-of-school children into the education system through complementary programmes.

Stakeholders agreed that the combined impact of government and partner support will significantly expand access to learning tools for thousands of learners, improve classroom participation, and strengthen foundational education across the state.

The initiative marks another step toward ensuring that children in Kaduna not only attend school, but are equipped with the tools needed to learn and succeed.
