Social Vices: Group holds interactive session with youths in Kaduna communities

A non-governmental organization, Think Tank is set to sensitize and empower youths in Kaduna State in order to curtail the incessant rate of criminality and social vices in the community.
This was made known by the Executive Director of the organization, Don Olivera Idahosa, during an interactive session with some group of young people in Kantiaga and Balck street areas of Chikun Local Government of the state.
He said the engagement is part of their commitment towards building a better society through quality leadership and good governance.
Idahosa mentioned that the interactive session will provide an avenue for them to listen to the youths and understand their challenges, stressing that it would help in providing a healthy society for the youth to dwell.
“Youths are the forerunners of leadeship in the whole world hence the need to build a right foundation for effective leadership, create knowledge sharing platform that focuses on capacity building among the youths”, the Executive Director noted.
He expressed concerns on how the selected communities for the engagement are well known for social vices especially substance abuse which he says occurs on a daily basis.
According to him; “This has become a norm to some youths and it needs to be tackled. Most of them don’t know the implication of their actions”.
“Some of them have skills already but needs startup kits while others need skills. And there are provisions to what skill they want to learn. The organization is opened for partnership”.
The aim of the engament according to him include: continous programmes that can give relief to the displaced in the society, accountability of public office holders to the people, conversations in resolving religious and ethnicity conflicts in the society.
Others are; setting a pace in quality leadership and good governance in the political landscape of Nigeria and Africa.
The participants were given forms to fill which would help categorising them based on the help they need.
While speaking, an aspirant of the Kaduna State House of Assembly under the Labour Party, Yusuf Solomon, also pledged to support in building the youths of the community to make lives of the people better.
In his words; “I will never ask you to vote for me, and wether you do or not, the most important thing is that I do something to make your life useful to you. The reason why most of you are where you are is because of social vices and am here to profer a long term solution”.
“There are many people that find themselves in a disadvantaged place, yet they struggled and survived. The decision you make now will determine if you will succeed or not”.
The aspirant also encouraged the youths to shun Juvenile deliquencies and pursue positivity.
Narrating her ordeal, one of the participants, Habiba Muhammed, said she born in the northern part of the state but loves residing in the southern part because she felt love among the people.
“We need to understand that love comes first. If we do so, we will live better. Parents should learn how to be close to their children. They should be friends to them as to avoid the broken home syndrome which has brought some youths to the street.
“The community should create guidance and counselling section in schools, and in the community for the youths awareness campaigns. Exposing the youths to things they’ve never dreamt of, social centers, amazing things not within their reach should be made available”, Habiba noted.
Also reacting, the community youth leader of Kantiaga, Titus Madaki stressed that most of the youths that involve in substance abuse and selling of the substance are graduates and have families, however sending NDLEA to the community to always arrest them is not the solution, rehabilitation is the answer.
“The challenge is that most of the youths are idle and have not acquired any skill, as such, government programmes should be extended to the people”, Madaki added.
He appreciated the Think Tank organization for showing concern over the wellbeing of the community, while encouraging them to get involved in counselling to know the challenges found among the youths.
