As part of strategy to improve access to sustainable and quality social services, aimed at ensuring the survival and development of children, in Kano State, the state government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), plans to launch a “Child Friendly Functional Ward” project.

The Child Functional Ward project, which would be piloted in one selected Ward, apart from meeting the development needs of children with improved access to sustainable, and quality social services, it also aims to create demand for services and promote active community participation and ownership.

Shamsuddeen Saleh, Planning and Monitoring Specialist, UNICEF Kano Field Office, disclosed this on Tuesday in Kaduna, during a planning meeting with some Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Kano State Government.

According to him, the planning meeting aims to develop strategies and proper frameworks on how to achieve the project and also plot roadmap for the implementation.

He said “the main intervention areas are the key sectors of Health, Education, Child Protection, Nutrition, Social Protection. Basically these are the areas. And in each of these areas we want to have a minimum package intervention services.

“These have to happen in that Ward for us to make sure that minimum package will provide what we need in terms of the basics that children needs to survive and to thrive in their lives.

“For example, in health we want to ensure that every child is immunized, every child has, right from when they are in their mothers womb they have that care in terms of Antae Natal Care (ANC), and all of the care the mother needs to deliver a healthy child and to ensure they survive from the first twenty eight days to first year to year five, we want to be there for the whole live circle of the child.

“For education likewise, the minimum package is to ensure every child is in school and learning, and in all other sectors we have that. That’s while we are here to agree on those things and strategize how we move forward and government is the one driving it.

The State, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Planning and Budget, Mallam Balarabe Hassan, noted that the state is committed to the project because of poor indices of nutrition and other sectors in the state.

“You know in Kano, we have a very high population, but with the intervention of UNICEF, we are seeing improvement, as am talking to you know, Kano State, has a functional Nutrition Policy and a Multi- Sectoral Plan of Action.

“Equally, Social Protection Policy has been developed with the help of Action Against Hunger, so with these policies in place am sure we would see a lots of changes the will see a proper development of children in Kano state.” He said.
