President Xi calls for cyberspace security, technological breakthroughs
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for further development of cyberspace security and informatization, together with breakthroughs in core Internet technology.
“Cyberspace security and informatization complement each other. Security is a prerequisite for Internet development, and development will also safeguard Internet security,” Xi said.
The President made the remarks while presiding over a symposium on cyber security and informatization in Beijing.
Internet defense capabilities should be enhanced, Xi said, adding that securing the online environment is a common responsibility for all of society and requires commitment from the government, enterprises, social organizations and netizens.

He also called on Internet companies to increase efforts to make breakthroughs in core Internet technology.
“More personnel, material and financial resources should be put toward research and development of core and strategically important technologies,” the President said.
The Internet, which is used by 700 million people in China, can play an important role in stimulating the country’s economy, according to Xi.
“The development of the Internet should be woven into the real economy, so that the flow of information will also drive the flow of technology, capital, talent, and goods. This would help optimize resource allocation.”
