NUJ Suspends Embattled Kaduna Former Chairman, Garba Muhammad

Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has suspended its embattled former Chairman, Comrade Garba Muhammad, indefinitely for dragging the Council to the National Industrial Court (NIC) in defiance to the constitution of the union.

The Union in a Communique signed by Dauda Idris Doka, Secretary of the Council, also suspended three others, Abubakar Abba, Balarabe Lawal Zaria and Habib Bello who swore an oath to the write of summon on the same matter.

The Communique reads in full;

The Nigeria Union of Journalists. (NUJ) Kaduna State Council held its congress on the 14th February, 2017 at the Council’s Secretariat at No 6A, Waff road. The congress was presided over by the Council Chairman Comrade Adamu Yusuf. The congress deliberated extensively on issues such as state of the council, nation and the state and resolved as follows:

1. On the state of the Council, the congress resolved unanimously to suspend indefinitely the impeached ‎Chairman Comrade Garba Muhammad for dragging the Council to the National Industrial Court (NIC) in defiance to the constitution of the union.

2. The congress also suspended indefinitely and barred from entering the secretariat as well as covering the activities of the council, Abubakar Abba, Balarabe Lawal Zaria and Habib Bello who swore on oath to the write of summon on the same matter.

3.‎ New standing and ad-hoc committee constituted with the following leadership (A) Ethics and Disciplinary Committee to be chaired by Mr Andrew Fadason (B) Welfare, Monitoring and Productivity Committee to be chaired by Dominic Uzu (C) The Press Centre Management Committee (PCMC) to be chaired by Elder Tajudeen Ajibade (D) The Peace and Reconciliatory committee to be chaired by Shuaibu Gimi (E) Screening Committee to be chaired by Peter Yaro and (F) The Elders and Advisory Committee to be chaired by Elder Joseph Edegbo.

4.   A proposed Media Resource Centre, Multipurpose hall and library as well as Peace Garden to be built within the premises‎ of the Secretariat in collaboration with a consultant was adopted by the congress.

5. The congress commended Kaduna  State government and the security agencies for their efforts in tackling security challenges in Southern Kaduna and urged them to sustain the tempo.

6. The congress pledged to assist the State and Federal government in whatever way possible to find lasting solutions to security challenges.

7. The congress applauded the State Government under the leadership of Malam Nasir El-Rufai on its developmental projects in the state and urged him not to relent in ‘making Kaduna Great Again’.

8. The congress frowned at the fractured relationship between the council and the state government and resolved to set up a committee that will foster ways of cementing the relationship.

9. The congress harps on professional ethics and conducts of members and vows to discipline any erring member.
