Malam Falalu M. Umar who lives in Nnamdi Azikwe road, known as bye pass, Bakin ruwa, Kaduna has a long-standing dream of becoming a soldier.

In an interview with newsmen in Kaduna NUJ secretariat yesterday, Umar said, he nursed an abiding ambition to become a combatant soldier since his childhood. He said, in the past when he was a teenage boy, he made several attempts to get recruited into the army by meeting some prominent persons like the late Matawalle of Katsina, the father of both Shehu Musa Yar’adua and President Umaru Musa Yaradua in Katsina, but he did not succeed. “My desire to join the Nigerian military keeps coming up in my mind from time to time since those days. But what prompted me to talk to the media now is the sacrifice of the President Muhammadu Buhari, who in spite of his old age of over 70, agreed to serve this country and make his contribution in its growth and development.” He said.

Falalu asked the Nigerian army to allow him accomplish his dream to serve even for just four 4 to five 5 years, before he is retired, because he said, he want to achieve his lifelong dream. When told that, why does he wants to join the army at a time the military is at war with boko haram insurgents in the North-east geopolitical region, Falalu answered that, he really wants to go to the frontline at Sambisa to fight.

“That is what I want to join the army. In fact, I want to go and fight in the battle with insurgents or any other battle that the military will assign me. If I know that, I will not be send to the frontline to fight a war, my dream of joining the army will not be fulfilled,” he said.

He appealed to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Colonel Yusuf Burati to consider his request to join the army so that he gives his contribution to the nation, by serving in the war front. According to him, he sometimes made attempts to join the short service course of the Nigerian Defence Academy NDA, but he did not succeed. But at a time he stopped because of his academic works at the Kaduna polytechnic where he trained as a building engineer.

Asked if he is not afraid to die, Falalu said, he is not and never be afraid to die. In fact, for him to die serving his country is a religious duty which he believed, is part of the teachings of his religion. “I really want to join the army to serve my fatherland. I dont mind to die,” He reiterated.

The man Falalu who owns a private firm, HAQ Construction and Aluminum Ventures Limited is a graduate of Higher National Diploma HND in building and Post graduate diploma in production Management from the Kaduna polytechnic. He is married to a wife and having seven kids.
