‘Many dead’ in Nigeria
market blast
An explosion has rocked a crowded
market in Nigeria, killing and injuring
many, residents said.
A member of the civilian joint task force in Biu
in north-east Nigeria said that the explosion is
the first bombing in the area.
He could not confirm if it was a suicide attack
or a planted bomb.
A high number of dead and injured are being
evacuated, he said.
Nigerian militant group Boko Haram is
suspected of carrying out the bombing.
The civilian joint task force is a group formed
by residents to combat Boko Haram.
He said that the number of dead and injured is
“very high”, adding: “For now we are trying to
get volunteers to donate blood to seriously
injured victims who have lost a lot of blood. The
hospital has run out of blood in its reserve, we
are told.”
Boko Haram has fought a five-year insurgency
against the Nigerian government, launching
scores of attacks that left 10,000 people dead
last year alone.
In recent weeks, the terror group has intensified
its assaults on neighbouring Cameroon and
Niger.
