Kaduna SEMA Assures of Nutrition Specific Budget Line for 2022

By Uangbaoje Alex, Kaduna

As part of efforts to improve nutrition amongst children and women in Kaduna state, especially those affected by emergency situations in the State, the State Emergency Management Agency, has pledge to include a specific budget line for nutrition issues for 2022.

The budget line, according to SEMA, Executive Secretary, Abubakar Hassan, when he played host to the State Committee on Food and Nutrition, led by the Director, Development Aid Coordination, Salihu Lawal, of the State Planning and Budget Commission, would address issues of malnutrition in children and women affected by disaster.

He noted that budgeting for an item is not a problem though, but timely release of the fund budgeted, for the implementation of project is a major challenge.

“Budget implementation is a function of so many variables, where you have the resources, yes it is easier, but where you have other contending issues, it becomes question of priority.

“So no doubt that we are going to have a budget line to address the issue of nutrition. We will have a budget line specifically for that.

“But beyond that, there is need for us to open up our options. For me I want to come from the solution to the problem, we need to see how we can achieve implementation with the resources available for nutrition.

“Building alternate options has been a major strategy for what I do and that’s how am driving SEMA towards ensuring that we realize the objectives that have been set for us. Government is one side and there are other actors; we have development partners who are ready to collaborate with us.

“In our plans, we are going to bring in development partners, this options of opening up our channels through credible propositions for collaboration should also be another option we are going to put on the other side to help us bring together our plan to deliver on nutrition in Kaduna State. The Executive Secretary, said.

Earlier, the State Coordinator for Civil Society Scaling-up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN), Jessica Bartholomew, had told the SEMA ES, that the purpose of the visit was to advocate for budgetary provision for nutrition activities and to include the State Nutrition Officer in the State’s Emergency Response Team, a request he graciously approved.
