Kaduna Electric Roles Out 1million Prepaid Meters

Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADCO), has disclosed that it is rolling out 1 million prepaid meters in the next three years to meet the demands of customers under it’s franchise.

The Managing Director of the company, Engr. Garba Haruna, made the disclosure on Wednesday at a media parley in Kaduna.

He said the meters will be rolled out in batches that will see about 80,000 customers getting meter in the first phase and 100,000 in the next batch which would be installed within the next three months.

According to him, over 400,000 has customers are already in dare need of the meters while the rest would be metered without their choice as it has become imperative for every consumer to be metered.

“The meters are not free, but will be distributed to customers whether they request for it or not and if they reject it, we disconnect them from our service as ordered by the regulator.

“We are not charging customers upfront. The meters will be giving out while we workout a payment procedure that will allow customers to pay without knowing it”. Engr. Haruna added.

He noted that the challenge being faced by distribution company is as result of the kinds of customers with background of using free electricity in the past, this he said, has change.

He explained that the price regime has not changed, but that what has changed was the removal of subsidy by the government which was not created by the distribution companies.

He further said the accumulated cost ranges from the gas producers to generation company to transmission company down to the distribution companies.

The MD, urged customers not to contribute money to anyone to provide them with electricity equipment as it is against their policy trust to do, adding “if anyone ask you to contribute, always ask them for KADECO’s receipt”.
