Kaduna Commissioner Task Wives of LG Chairmen on Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV

By Hauwa Negedu, KadunaThe Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Balori Muhammed, has charged wives of Local Government Chairmen in the state and other stakeholders to be committed to demand creation and awareness on the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, as part of strategies to eliminate the scourge.Dr. Amina gave the charge in her address during a meeting with spouses of LG Chairmen and Chairpersons in the state, organized by wife of the Governor, Hajia Ummi el-Rufai on PMTCT.She stated that Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV aims at eliminating transmission of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy, labour, delivery and breast feeding. She added that it is in record that, Mother to Child Transmission accounts for about 90% of infections in children, hence the State Government’s determination to ensure that no child is born with HIV infection in Kaduna State. The Commissioner further stated that Kaduna State has made significant progress in its response to HIV/AIDS epidemic in the past 10years, especially in the area of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of the disease. Notably, there was a reduction of 84% HIV prevalence within the period (7.0% in 2008 to 1.1% in 2018).She said that part of the current efforts of the State Government to achieve the UNAIDS 90-90-90 target is to achieve the total Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV by 2021.“However, the Kaduna State AIDs indicator and impact survey (KADIAS 2018) revealed that intense work needs to be carried out in high prevalence Local Government areas such as; Kajuru topping the list with 6.7%.” she added
She further stated that achieving this goal would improve the lives and wellbeing of the State’s women and children, and appealed to stakeholders to fully commit to the goal. She appreciated the wife of the Governor, for taking time out of her busy schedules to attend the program. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Chief of Field, Dr. Adam Zakari, also urged them that as much as resources are required to accelerate PMTCT, their personal involvement matters in ensuring close follow up on happening in each of the LGAs, especially on the Local Government Action Committee on Aids and Focal Persons assigned to monitor the plan implementation.”By personally paying them working visits to support them, I am sure they will feel motivated to achieve more results.”
