KADSURWASH Trains Over 100 Community Leaders in Jaba on Grievance Redress for Water Projects

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in water and sanitation interventions, the Kaduna State Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (KADSURWASH) program has successfully trained over 100 community leaders in Jaba Local Government Area on effective grievance redress mechanisms.

The intensive training held in Kwoi, the local government headquarters, targeted the newly established Community Grievance Redress Committees (CGRCs), equipping them with the knowledge and skills to handle complaints, manage conflict, and ensure proper documentation throughout project implementation.

Community leaders from eleven communities; Unguwan Dadawa, Unguwan Irimiya Kaduna, Unguwan Nabila Dattijo, Kare, Idar, Unguwan Bawa Kachiro, Unguwan Audu Gaiya, Unguwan Audu Kishimi, Unguwan Alkali Yabubu, Ankung, and Unguwan Dakachi were taken through sessions on community engagement, record-keeping, ownership, and sustainability.

Addressing participants, facilitator Halima Uba Abba emphasized the importance of community ownership in ensuring long-term sustainability. “The success of SURWASH depends on you. If you see these projects as your own, you will protect and sustain them,” she told the participants.

On grievance handling, Ms. Mercy Madaki, Social Safeguards Officer at RUWASSA, stressed that having a functional grievance redress system is central to promoting inclusiveness and accountability.

“Timely and fair resolution of complaints not only improves trust but also strengthens project outcomes,” she said.

Mr. Gamaliel Jangalu Stephen, Technical Assistant for Environmental Safeguards, explained that the CGRC initiative is aligned with SURWASH’s broader framework to institutionalize social inclusion and transparency in water and sanitation service delivery.

“This training is part of our commitment to ensure citizens are not only beneficiaries but active participants in the process,” he noted.

The WASH Coordinator for Jaba LGA, Salamatu Ahmed, praised the Kaduna State Government and the KADSURWASH team for their proactive approach to community-driven development.

She highlighted the initiative as a model for inclusive governance and rural empowerment.

Some participants, speaking after the training, expressed appreciation to KADSURWASH, Director General of RUWASSA, Engr. Mubarak Shehu Ladan, and Governor Uba Sani for the opportunity to build their capacity. They pledged to use the knowledge gained to ensure fair, inclusive, and timely resolution of grievances in their respective communities.

With the training concluded, the newly inaugurated Grievance Redress Committees are expected to begin full operations, serving as accessible platforms for community members to voice concerns and resolve issues as KADSURWASH projects advance across Jaba LGA.
