Guaranteed Safety For Health Workers Panacea For Effective Performance – RCAI

When there is an assurance that the safety of health workers can be guaranteed in any society, effective and efficient performance can also be assured, the Executive director Rehoboth Community Advancement Initiative (RCAI) Mr Nathaniel Ciwon Abaniwo has said.
Speaking against the backdrop of recent attack on health workers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) lokoja in Kogi state, Mr Abaniwo in a statement signed by him reiterated that the safety and protection of health care workers and health care infrastructure is Paramount particularly at periods of pandemic such as the Corona Virus pandemic.
Towards this end, he said “Rehoboth Community Advancement Initiative a front line Women and Children Centered Non-governmental Organization in Kogi State, condemn in its entirety the recent attack on the only Federal Medical Centre in Kogi State by unknown gunmen.
“First and foremost, we would like to express our heartfelt support for all the health workers responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for those working tirelessly in so many other areas of health care as well”.
He emphasised that Healthcare workers, facilities and medical vehicles should never be a target of violence, and urged governments, communities and all weapon bearers to respect and protect health care workers at all times, and to contribute to creating a protective environment in which health care services can be provided safely.
“Ensuring that health care workers are safe and able to carry out their jobs is crucial for their protection and that can be guarantee by any responsible Government. Their protection is essential in ensuring they continue to care for the lives of people affected by diseases.
“Health care workers are often exposed to all forms of infectious diseases in their life-saving activity and they should not also be made vulnerable to any form of physical attack” he stressed.
Rehoboth Community Advancement Initiative called on the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello to as a matter of urgent priority intervene by ensuring a panel of enquiry look into the immediate cause of such needless attack on Federal Medical Center Lokoja and recommend appropriate measures to resolve all issues associated with COVID 19 in the state.
“We call on the security agencies to investigate the breach in security at the Federal Medical Center Lokoja, and anyone found culpable in this dishonorable act be made to face the full wrath of the law.
“We call on the leadership of Kogi NGO Network (KONGONET) to develop implementable strategies to bring both the State Government and the management of Federal Medical Center to a discussion table where all issues can be resolve in the best interest of the State.
“We call on the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Matthew Kolawole to as a matter of urgent priority set up a committee to interface with both State Executive and the representatives of various Health workers union and resolve all issues bothering on COVID 19 in the State”.
