Group advocates Special Court for SGBV cases

By Uangbaoje Alex, Kaduna

Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), stakeholders in Kaduna, have called on the Nigeria government to establish special Court to handle cases of SGBV.

A panel of discussants at an event to mark the 16 days of activism against SGBV, with the theme: “Invest to Prevent Violence against Women & Girls” organized by the Kaduna Civil Society Coalition Against SGBV, uninamously agreed that the only solution to the unending litigations and injustice melted on victims of SGBV, is to establish a court where the judges will be trained specially to take care of the cases.

They emphasized that setting time frame for SGBV cases will go along way in dispensing justice for victims and will also give others hope and confidence to speak up.

The panelists noted that until some of the foundamental issues are addressed perpetrators of SGBV will continue in their act without fears.

They said one of the things that has helped in the fight; is collaboration amongst stakeholders and that there’s need to sustain it by doing more engagements, social mobilizations and sensitization.

Earlier in her opening speech, Coordinator of the Coalition, Bar. Bukola Ajao, expressed happiness over CSOs participation in the fight against SGBV.

She said it is important for members to be united in the fight against SGBV, adding that unity can go a long way in bringing the required change.

“Everyone needs to play their role by using their platforms, we all have to invest, develop the skills of those in the communities, community engagement is key in getting the pause of what is happening to people in the communities.” She added.

On his part, State Coordinator of National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Terngu Gwar, lamented that despite efforts being made in fight against SGBV, not much progress has been made.

He said it is important that people know that the issue of SGBV is not just an issue of human right violation, but also a development problem and that until it is dealth with, the nation can not move forward.

“As at today, the level of women participation in the economic activities and decision making is zero.” He noted.

Dr. Terngu, therefore called on all stakeholders not to relent in their efforts at reducing or eliminating SGBV in the country.
