Food security: Implement Nationwide Deforestation Policy – OXFAM-PROSELL Project Urges Taraba Govt

OXFAM in collaboration with Development Exchange Centre (DEC) under the European Union funded project called “Produce and Sell” (PROSELL) has urged the Taraba State government under Governor Dairus Dickson Ishaku, to implement the nationwide deforestation policy as strategy to increase food security.

A media brief compiled by Governance and Influencing Coordinator, OXFAM – PROSELL Project, Daniel M. Abah, and made available to development journalists noted that, the issue of food security is of paramount importance which is largely linked to the environment and climate.

According to that media brief, every year, the World Environment Day is marked on June 5, to spur more action and increase awareness on protecting the environment especially as ecosystem loss deprives the world of carbon sinks, forests and peatlands at a time humanity can least afford it.

The document read in part, “global greenhouse gas emissions have grown for three consecutive years and the planet is one pace for potentially catastrophic climate change.

“These challenges and more resultant in food insecurity, loss of lives and property, destruction of means of livelihood, and generally increased scarcity of resources.

“The issue of food security is of paramount importance and is largely linked to the environment and climate. With this big and challenging picture, the World Environment Day is focusing on “Ecosystem Restoration” and its themed “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore” and for Taraba State, we have chosen to focus on ‘Action for Environment Sustainability.

“This World Environment Day, we seek the commitment of the Taraba State government in adopting the “UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030)”, a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands Government action at local and state levels in this vein will help in preventing, halting and reversing damage from deforestation.

“We were pleased with Taraba State government’s commitments to reviewing the State’s forestry laws to ensure the penalties are stiffer and that it reflects current realities and needs.

“PROSELL Project (European Union Support to Food Security & Resilience in Taraba State) with support from European Union will continue to strengthen local communities to adapt to environmental and socioeconomic changes through its many programs.

“We are currently providing 900,000 economic tree seedlings and facilitating knowledge transfer on Good agricultural practices (GAP) that helps the condition of the immediate microsystem of Taraba State community. Following World Environment Day, we hope to establish sustainability and expansion of the project’s gains to all communities across the state”.
