There was disaster yesterday in many parts of Kaduna metropolis as flood took over many communities in the state.
Thousands were left stranded as pain and anguish can be seen written on the faces of those affected.
Areas affected includes Kigo Road new extension, Kudenda, Ungwa-Rimi, Ungwa-Romi, Barnawa, Malali, Gonin-Gora among others.
Narrating their ordeals, Victims of the flood said the waters
started building up on Sunday at about 2pm , but later became worst at about 7pm with hundreds of houses, especially those by the river submerged completely.
Several farm lands, fish ponds and poultry farms were equally destroyed by the heavy flood that have raged several parts of the metropolis.
Officials from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) were on ground coordinating the rescue operations even as many residents are said to stranded in their houses.
Youths from the area were seen making brisk business as assisting to rescue a stranded individual cost between 5-10 thousand naira, while rescuing a stranded car also cost between 10 – 20 thousand naira depending on your bargaining power.
Due to the enormity of the flood canoe was been used to curry persons and properties to safety.
Speaking at Kigo Road where he came to see the extent of damage and the suffering of the people, Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani said the flood is a monumental disaster and tragedy of the highest order.
According to Sani, the flood is a direct effect of climate change and the mismanagement of ecological fund by the previous administration in the country.
One of displaced resident in Kudenda, Kayode Emmanuel told Newsweb Express that he and other neighbours couldn’t pack their loads because they were caught unawares.
” We first saw the river rising and then later overflowing its bounds .We thought it was the usual flood only to discover that it was very heavy”. Emmanuel said.
At Kigo Road a metropolitan area frequently ravaged by floods yearly, Ogbonna Chukwu, an artisan said the area has always been consumed by flood but this year’s flood is the worst.
Ogbonna who said they were warned and advised to leave the area, particularly , those of them whose house are close to river Kaduna lamented, “As you can see , the flood has affected almost all the major streets and houses at Kigo Road including my own.”
