Finally, INEC Settles PDP Crisis, Backs Makarfi Committee

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has finally settled the leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as it accords recognition to the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.

The commission had previously declined to recognise any of the factional chairmen pending the resolution of the crisis by the court.
However, following the July 4 Federal High Court judgement in Port Harcourt, the commission recognised Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who was produced by Senator Makarfi’s committee, as PDP candidate for September 10 Edo State governorship election.
It has refused to monitor the primary election conducted by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction because it failed to give it the mandatory 21 days notice as contained in the Electoral Act.
But in its bulletin on Tuesday, INEC said it “ratified the administrative approval granted to the Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the judgment of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt by recognising the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP for all its activities.”
The recognition came ahead of the coming primary election for the Ondo State governorship election.
