FG Borrows N600bn Monthly To Pay Salaries, Says Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Jos disclosed that his administration borrows an average of N600 billion every month to augment and pay salaries of workers.
President Buhari spoke at the opening of 63rd General Council of the Evangelical Church meeting held in Jos. He was however represented by Engr. David Babachir Lawal, Secretary to the Government of Federation.
Buhari told church leaders that his administration inherited a country that had been robbed to the last coffers, leaving an ailing economy that must be nurtured and endured for some time before it stabilises.
He assured all citizens that, given the desired support, trust and co-operation, Nigeria would be revived within a short time.
The President therefore called on the church to join government in its fight against corruption by preaching the gospel that would make people desist from corrupt tendencies and embrace honesty, transparency and accountability.
He said his government came into power at the brink of collapse of the nation which over the years been riddled by corruption, insurgency, youth unemployment and economic meltdown.
He commended the immense contribution of ECWA to the development of the country particularly in assisting the in prayers, which led to a free and fair election and the smooth transition process.
“By the Grace of the almighty God I stand here before you as the representative of the duly elected government of Nigeria, by virtue of the transparent electoral process,” he said.
Speaking on the high rate unemployment in the country , the SGF said government was still strategising to open up industrial sector to create employment opportunities for the teeming youth by encouraging all agencies and parastatals as well as foreign investors to open up more employment opportunities and skill acquisition activities in the country.
“Likewise in the area of our economy, efforts are being geared towards the diversification into viable areas of agriculture and solid minerals so as to save our economy from total dependence on oil,” he said.
“All these efforts require the enabling peaceful environment which cannot be achieved without the sustained prayers of all faith-based organisations of which this church is one,” he said.
