ELECTIONS 2015: US support INEC to use
PVCs and card readers

The United States Government has said
that it supports the decision of the
Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC to use Permanent
Voters Cards and Smart card readers in
the forthcoming general elections.

The US government through its vice
president, Joe Biden, spoke with President
Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate
and the presidential candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, General
Muhammadu Buhari on the forthcoming
presidential election.
In a statement issued by the US Embassy
on Thursday, Biden commended President
Jonathan and General Buhari for signing
the Abuja Accord in as a show of their
commitment to non-violence throughout
the election process.

The statement read in parts, “The Vice President further expressed the United
States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral
Commission and its work to deliver free,
fair, and credible elections, in part
through its essential efforts to distribute
Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure
that electronic voter card readers are in
place and fully operational.”

Biden however noted his concern about
the violence during some recent election-
related events and reiterated the need for
both presidential candidates to say no to
violence during the elections, as violence
has no place in democratic elections.
Biden further stated that the US
government would support to Nigeria in
carrying out credible and peaceful
elections, and would continue to support
Nigeria whatever the outcome of
elections.
