Election Hate Campaigns: NUJ Berates APCON, NBC

The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has berated the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) for not screening advertisements of hate campaigns being aired on Some television stations and being published in national dailies.

In a communique issued at the end of a one day training workshop for Journalist on election reporting with theme: Media Role In Making 2015 General Election violence – free organized by the Kaduna state NUJ.
The communique which was co-signed by the council Chairman and Secretary Comrade Yusuf Idris and Dominic Uzu also frowned at the activities of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for failing in it responsibility to call to order certain media houses from carrying hate adverts.

They calls on media owners to accord priority to staff welfare in protecting the image of the media profession, saying that so many media houses are guilty of not paying their staff regularly.

According to the communique “Participants unanimously agreed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is on the right path to building an enduring democracy for the nation with its initiative and innovation.”

They advised the Inspector General of police and the INEC chairman to close ranks over the right of voters during and after casting their votes adding “the issue is unnecessary bickering between them.”

Participants of the workshop also urged security agencies to perform their duties constitutionally in order to avoid any act or actions capable of derailing the hard earned democracy in the country.
