Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has assured pensioners in the state of immediate payment of their benefits after retirement.
The governor said the adoption of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) by the state government will ensure timely payment to every qualified person that worked in the public service of the state. He added ”This was aimed at ensuring that every qualified person that worked in public civil service receives their benefits as at when due”.
The governor gave the assurance in his remark at the flag-off ceremony of the sensitization programme on the Contributory Pension Scheme in Kaduna on Thursday, saying, the scheme came into being in Kaduna state with the enactment of Kaduna state pension law No. 4 of 2016.
Represented by Secretary to Kaduna State Government, SSG, Alh. Abbas Balarabe, the governor explained that the law provided that employer would contribute a minimum of 10% while employee would contribute 5% of their monthly emoluments.
According to him, the adoption of the scheme in Kaduna was inline with the reforms introduced by federal government upon realization of the fact that the Pay-As-You Go pension system had become burdensome and unsustainable, because the funding was shouldered 100% by government and dependent on budgetary provisions.
He stated that the problems was further compounded by periodic pension increased which had led government and some statutory corporations into arrears of gratuity and pension running into billions of Naira.
“It is in the light of these problems that the pension reform Act 2004, which is contributory in nature, was fashioned out by federal government and adopted in the state to alleviate multiple of problems that characterized the existing pension system”, said the governor.
He therefore enjoined public servants, particularly pensioner and prospective pensioners to understand, appreciate and support the scheme towards actualizing the purpose for which it was established, and assured of government unflinching commitments towards ensuring the well being of public servants.
