Climate Change: Kaduna Stakeholders tasks Government on UN Convention

Ahead of the 27th Conference of Parties (COP) 2022, environment stakeholders in Kaduna State, on Wednesday called on government at all levels to show commitment to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed into by the Nigeria government.

The stakeholders made the call at a Media Roundtable, organized by Bridge That Gap Initiative, supported by Extinction Rebellion (XR), tagged “Tell the Truth”, as part of it’s pre-COP27 activities, starting 6th November in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international movement that aims to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency with branches all over the world including Kaduna.

The Conference of Parties (COP) is an annual meeting of all States that are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to review the implementation of the Convention and other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote effective implementation.

The stakeholders are worried that despite the promises and assurance given by world leaders at the 26th COP, implementation is still a serious challenge.

They warned that if nothing is done deliberately about implementing climate action, the world might be heading to extinction as climate change is seriously taking a toll on humans.

The said the environment has lost it natural beauty and that it is time for action beyond politics.

The group expressed disappointment over Kaduna State handling of tree planting after cutting down a lot of them in executing it’s urban renewal, without planting enough in replacement.

They therefore advised the government to be more committed to issues of climate change to protect the lives of her citizens.

In her remarks, Executive Director of Bridge That Gap Initiative, Gloria Kasang Bulus, disclosed that Civil Society Organizations in the State are doing what they could to support the government, but that some expects of government has decided to shut their doors against.

She noted that most of the things been done by government are without consulting those who represents the citizens.

Gloria, therefore urged the state government to act justly in line with the climate justice.
