635 Houses Destroyed as Flood Hits Sokoto
Five hundred and eighty five houses from seven communities in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State were destroyed by flood on Friday.
This increased the number of houses destroyed by flood in the area to 635, as it would be recalled that 52 houses were destroyed penultimate week.
The Friday incident occurred in the middle of the night as a result of a heavy downpour.
Chairman of the council area, Alhaji Abdulkadir Jelani, who spoke to newsmen yesterday said many of the victims were squatting with relatives and neighbours, but added that no life was lost.
He named the towns affected as; Wurno, Laka, Barayar Zaki, Tambogarkar Daji, Koliyal Kwargaba and Tunga.
“The problem was aggravated by the blockage of some drainages in the affected towns and their environs”, he said.
Jelani stated that although there was no loss of life, the flood destroyed farm produce worth millions of Naira.
He said the local government had set up a 13-man committee to find out the remote and immediate causes of the disaster.
‘’It will also assess the extent of damage caused by the flood, as well as recommend the form of assistance to be rendered to the victims.
The chairman however appealed to the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other donor agencies to come to the aid of the victims.
