60 Schools gets UNICEF, DFID Facelift in 6 LGAs of Niger State

Sixty (60), schools in six (6) Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Niger State are receiving facelift under the United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF), Girl Child Education Project (GEP111), supported by Department for International Development (DFID).

Mr Francis Elisha, Education Officer, UNICEF Kaduna, who revealed this during a field monitoring of the projects being implemented that 40 pubic primary school and 20 Integrated Quranic centers that, the benefiting LGAs include Munya, Agaie, Gbako, Mariga, Rafi and Mashegu local governments.

Elisha said that the implementation of the projects was N90 million, adding that UNICEF and DFID had released N60 million for the projects.

“This project is a N90 million micro grant meant for renovation of 40 public primary schools and 20 Integrated Quranic centers across the benefiting local government areas.

“We are partnering with the communities and the school management committee for the implementation work and renovation,” he said.

He disclosed that ten public primary schools had been renovated while others were still under renovation.

The education officer, however noted that the projects
was to create conducive learning environment for pupils through community partnership and promote community ownership.

Also, Dr Zakari Adam, Chief of UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, reiterated UNICEF/DFID commitment to continue to support improvement of quality of learning in Niger state.

“We are totally committed to support every child go to school especially girl child,” he said.
