1, 000 Quack Lawyers Operating Illegally, Says NBA
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) through its stamp policy launched on the April 15 this year, the association disclosed on Monday.
Mr. Akintokunbo Oluwole, a Vice-President of the association (NBA) made the disclosure in his address delivered at the special court sitting to mark the 2015/2016 legal year in Ondo State.
Oluwole said the fake lawyers, who had also devised means of scuttling the implementation of the stamp policy, had become a threat to the legal profession.
He noted that the issue of quacks among lawyers which had become a cankerworm had already forayed into the cherished bar profession.
The Ondo State Chief Justice, Olasehinde Kumuyi, said many of the discoveries were made during the industrial action embarked upon by the judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).
Kumuyi revealed that top on the discoveries was affidavit forgery noting that dubious individuals now carved out personal stamps for themselves.
He lamented the issuance of the forged affidavits to unsuspecting members of the public whom, he said, always fall victims of such.
According to him, the activities of these dubious individuals negated the integrity of the profession thereby reducing the oath process to ridicule.
The State Chief Judged added that the action also denied government its revenue drive stressing that the way to check the trend was to ban affidavits by proxy no matter the deponent’s status.
Earlier in his speech at the Special Church Service, Governor Olusegun Mimiko said it was high time the judiciary remained impartial.
Mimiko, who spoke at the St. David Cathedral Church, in Akure, noted that the judiciary was very critical to the country’s developing democracy.
