Two young men in the ages of 17 and 20 respectively have been drowned in River Kaduna, allegedly trying to escape police arrest over unidentified criminal offence.

No fewer than 15 Police men  were said to have swooped on picnickers last Friday by the bank of River Kaduna in Kinkino axis of the river in the metropolis, threatening to shoot any of the picnicker that tried to run away.

But when contacted, Spokesman, of Kaduna State Police Command,  DSP,  Abubakar Zubairu denied knowledge of the incident.

He said,  “The information is not true , it is mischievous,  frivolous and misleading,  they are just trying to tarnish or dent good image of police. Police did chase anybody , neither did they see anybody that ran to somewhere because of their presence.

“Police were on routine crime prevention patrol and nobody came to complain police action or inaction, and if anybody with genuine complaint,  he should come up, so that we can investigate”.

However, two eyewitnesses who are survivors of the incident said they were so frightened by the police threat that they decided to jump into the river in order to swim to the other side of it to evade arrest, even when they claimed that they did not commit any crime.

But two of the escaping persons were said to have  drowned in the river,  while the other two were able to swim across the river.

The names of the deceased were given as Aliyu Garba, 20, and Ahmed Nasir,17, while the survivors were Aminu Bashir and Hassan Adamu.

As at the time of filing this report,  the bodies of the deceased persons were still not found in the river as fishermen were busy trying to find the bodies.

Accordng to Aminu Bashir (Survivor) who spoke to newsmen yesterday, “Last Friday, October 9, 2015, we were sitting by the bank of River Kaduna in Kinkino area of Kaduna city, taking photographs of ourselves, when all of a sudden we saw many police men running towards us with guns, then I jumped into the river and swam across to the other side of the river. We were four in number that jumped into the river, but two out of us got drowned in the water because they couldn’t swim.

“We saw one of the policemen who pulled off his uniform and jumped into the water to catch us, and the other policemen were standing by the river bank, watching us, with some of them saying that we should be left to die in the water.

“The policemen were up to 10 in number. They came from different angles of the area we were sitting. So there was no way we could escape them other than to swim across the river.

“We did not know why the police came to the river bank, but we decided to run for our dear lives because they were saying that if we dare run, they would shoot us.

“We decided to run from the police because we were frightened by their threat of shooting us”.

Meanwhile, Fathers of the deceased have respectively vowed to seek justice in the law court against the police authority, even as the appealed to Inspector General of  Police to intervene and fish out the police that raided the area.

Alhaji Aminu Garba (Father to Aliyu ,20), said, ” I am seeking justice, and I      expect the IGP to take action against those policemen. I want an apology from the IGP, not financial compensation because it won’t bring back my son”.

Nura Mohammed (Father to Ahmed, 17), said, ” I want those policemen to face justice in this era of change. I will do all I could legally to fight this injustice.  I will seek redress and justice in the law court”.
