Illegal Security Operators: NSCDC, ALPSPN To Establish Joint TaskForce

 By Alex Uangbaoje, Kaduna

As part of measures to track down activities of illegal security operators in Nigeria, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Association of Licenced Private Security Practitioners of ‎Nigeria (ALPSPN) has resolved to establish a joint taskforce with effect from 2017.

This formed part of the resolutions ‎reached at the stakeholders forum meeting between the NSCDC and the ALPSPN Kaduna State chapter held in Kaduna yesterday.

In his address at the forum, the Head of Department of Private Guards Company (PGC)‎ NSCDC headquarters Abuja, Assistant Commandant General (ACG) Nathaniel Obong said the purpose of the stakeholders forum was among others to activate the regulator/operators interface for good working relationship geared towards achieving set goals for mutual benefits.

He disclosed “the Commandant General has given a nod to the establishment of a state-based taskforce that would involve members ‎of the ALPSPN and the PGC Department in the states to combat the menace of quackery  and illegal operations.

“The goal of the taskforce ‎is aimed at securing business for legal operators who have allegiance to the government through licencing and renewal of their licence”.

He however called on private guards operators‎ to make payment of their staff salaries a top priority, stressing that a hungry guard may become an angry guard and cannot be composed on duty.

Also speaking, the Kaduna State Commandant of. NSCDC, Alhaji Modu Bunu‎ while commending the activities of private guards operators in the state also lamented the activities of quacks in the system. He urged that all hands must be on deck to wipe them out.

“You should be supplying us with information on their locations and existence wherever they are, because we cannot do this alone without your full cooperation as these illegal faces are killing the industry.”

Earlier in his address, the ‎Chairman ALPSPN Kaduna State chapter and managing director/ Chief Executive Officer of Unity Integrated Security Services limited, Mr Dauda Zuye-Nda Ageni reiterated the association’s resolve to continue to collaborate with NSCDC in training of their personnel and the security guards in line with the service charter.

He lamented that “the use of internal security by some public organisations has caused low patronage to private security by such organisations, in some areas, government agencies are seen taking over the roles of private security operators.

“The activities of quack operators have doubled over the past few months thereby denying our members their legitimate source of income. This is in addition to the multiple taxes being paid by our companies to run business. In this recession, we appeal through our regulators that such fees which are too enormous to mention be scaled down to enable us survive the current recession”.
