The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase, has ordered the redeployment of two additional units of anti-riot policemen to Agatu in Benue State, to reinforce the unit already on ground. This is to stem the frequent attacks allegedly perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.

A statement issued yesterday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olabisi Kolawole, said the additional deployment followed the IGP’s assessment visit to the ravaged area, and the need to bring the situation under control. It is also to arrest the perpetrators of brutal killings in the place, which led to the killing of two policemen, which the IGP described as “regrettable”.

The statement said the IGP assessed the impact of the attack on the people in the nine villages and took a decision to also increase logistical needs of the state command to enhance the operation.

“Based on his assessment and coupled with the logistical requirement, the IGP immediately deployed two units of police mobile force to the area, to reinforce the unit on ground, while additional police operational vehicles were also sent to the commissioner of police in the state command to aid operational support.

Recall that the Federal Government has completed arrangements to have a town hall meeting with stakeholders in the various umbrella associations of herders and farmers, state governments, non-governmental organisations, civil societies, the media, MDAs, professional bodies, humanitarian institutions among others.

According to the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazzau: “This is to examine factors that give rise to such conflicts as well as discuss ways to finding lasting solution to the crisis.”
