Drama in Court as Former Kaduna Governor Gets Bail, Frees 31 Prisoners

There was mid drama at the premises of the Federal High Court sitting in, Kawo Kaduna on Wednesday, during the trial of former governor of Kaduna State, Ramalan Yero, when mammoth crowd of supporters prevented prevented the Prisons’ vehicle from conveying him (Yero) back to the prison for other documentation, insisting that he must be convey with a private vehicle; SIENNA numbered DKA-940AV, after he has been granted bail.

Yero was arraigned alongside a former minister, Nuhu Wya, ex-PDP chairman in the state, Abubakar Gaya-Haruna and former secretary to the state government, Hamza Ishaq.

They were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge bordering on laundering over N700 million in 2015.

When the case came up on May 30, all the four defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His supporters were heard shouting, “he has perfected the bail conditions and he must not be carry with the prison’s vehicle.”
Despite the shooting of teargas on the air by security personnel to dispersed the mammoth crowd to prevent any damage, they were unperturbed in their stance until he was transferred to the private vehicle.
The crowd, both men, women, boys and girls had all their prayers throughout the court sitting period. They barricaded the road leading to Kawo, Zaria, Jos and other neighbouring states, chanting “Baba Buhari Barawo, El-Rufai Barawo” with placards and banners with different inscriptions.
The former governor regained his freedom as the presiding judge, justice Lawal Shuaibu gave bail conditions of one million naira and two surety.

Shortly after Yero was granted bail, his lawyer, Barr. Yunus Ustaz Usman SAN says, “Yero is entitled to bail because the alleged offences are not murder and so they are bailable offenses”.
Barr. Usman who said that he had ealier put forward before the court a motion for bail application, added that he was satisfied with the granting of the application for the bail of his client.
Meanwhile, after perfecting his bail conditions, the ex-governor, also secured the bail of thirty-one (31) inmates serving various jail terms for different offenses at the Kaduna Central Prison.
According to a statement signed by Yero’s former Commissioner, Samaila Aliyu, “the former governor is a compassionate person with full milk of human kindness who sees his remand as a reason to secure the liberty and freedom of the convicted people.
“Yero urged them to reflect on the good lessons they have learnt while in prison.”
Athough, Samaila Aliyu who signed the statement on behalf of Yero did not give specific amount spent for the release of the inmates, but added that the amount is over three million naira.
