The military has this afternoon retaken
the town of Baga in Borno state, which
was overrun by Boko Haram in early
January.
The insurgents had attacked the military
base in the town where the Multinational
Joint Task Force comprising troops from
Chad, Niger and Cameroon, was camped,
carting away weapons and other
equipment.
They razed many buildings and homes in
the week that followed, shooting civilians
as they tried to flee, eyewitnesses said.
Some accounts had put the death toll as
high as 2,000, although the military said it
was 150.
Soldiers had fled the area after it was was
overrun.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau later
boasted in a video released online, that
the weapons seized by the sect from Baga
were “enough to annihilate the whole of
Nigeria.”
The present effort by the military is part of
an ongoing six-week counter-terrorism
offensive, aimed at retaking all the towns
occupied by the Islamist sect before the
commencement of the general elections
in March.
