Benin Crown Prince Installed as Oba Ewuare II of Benin Kingdom

The new Oba of Benin was installed and presented with the staff of office today as Oba Ewuare II of Benin Kingdom.

The Oba had begun the coronation process days ago by trekking from Uselu to Eko-Ohae, a journey of about 10 kilometers in line with tradition.

The king also climbed a 500-year old palm tree, a symbolic rite imitative of one of the greatest Benin kings, Oba Ewuare the great.

Erediauwa, the king, also wrestled with the Chief Priest of Okhuaihe shrine, Osarodion Usuanlele as part of the traditional rites for the coronation processes.

The king and priest then went to the sacred forest to perform some rites.

According to Edo State Police Commissioner, Haliru Abubakar Gwandu, about 5,000 security personnel are on ground to maintain law and order in the state.

Also, the Edo State government declared today a public holiday in the state so to reduce traffic congestion and to ensure that residents can participate in the activities.

Oba Eheneden Erediauwa reemerged from where had been camped as part of the rites for weeks before joining Urokpota Hall where dignitaries and other monarchs awaited his arrival.

He was presented with the official staff of office by Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomole.

However, he was reportedly crowned around 2am according to traditional dictates.
