Access to Education: PERL-ECP, Creates Synergy Among SBMCs, PTAs, Others in Kaduna

As part of efforts to create synergy among School Based Management Committees (SBMCs), Parents Teacher Associations (PTAs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the media to to make access to education easy, the Engaged Citizens Pillar (ECP), an arm of Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL), on Monday commenced a 4 Days “Initial fact-finding meeting” with all the stakeholders in Zaria.

The meeting according to PERL-ECP State Partnership Facilitator, Mustapha Kurfi, is aimed at providing opportunities for all stakeholders to discuss the issues militating against harmonious working relationship in contributing their quota in the transformation of education sector in the Kaduna State.

He added that the meeting will also support SBMCS, PTAs, Traditional Institutions, Media and relevant
stakeholders to identify gaps in school improvement system.

Kurfi, explained that it will equally prepare SBMCs, PTAs, CSOs and other stakeholders to articulate issues from the National Education policy for inclusion into the State
Education policy being develop.

“It will help to reflect and understand the level of adherence and implementation
of existing SBMCs and PTAs guidelines in the Kaduna State”. He said.

On her part, Hadiza Umar, a consultant with PERL who is facilitating the meeting, the essence of the partnership, is to avoid and address harmful educational practices and also ensure collective community participation in school management as SBMCs, PTAs, CSOs, traditional/religious leaders & media.

“Initiating and sustaining school improvement programmes through provision of security, active and inclusively participate in decision making as it affects our schools serve as role models and custodians of values and culture.

“Promotion of morality and inclusive practices in school and communities, advocacy, articulation of demands and mobilization of resources for schools, thereby creating access, retention and transition to ensure presence, participation and achievement for all children. She explained.

PERL is a UK Department for International Development (DFID), Public Sector Accountability and Governance funded flagship programme which started in 2016.

The programme is focused on reforms of how governments organise their core business of making, implementing, tracking and accounting for policies, plans and budgets used in delivering public goods and services to the citizenry, and how citizens themselves engage with these processes.

While, Engaged Citizens Pillar (ECP) is a new approach led by citizens to strengthen government’s response to service delivery issues by facilitating constructive engagements with the State House of Assembly, the Media and Civil Society groups.
