70 firefighters battling huge fire in east London block of flats

A HUGE cloud of smoke can be seen over East London after a fire broke out in a four-storey residential block and one man was taken to hospital.

More than 70 firefighters were scrambled to the blaze in Bethnal Green, which saw flames and thick black smoke pouring from windows of a four storey block.

London Fire Brigade sent ten engines to the blaze, which started in a third floor flat and quickly spread to the roof of the building.

Half of the flat and part of the roof is alight with the cause of the fire not known.

LFB said all residents have been accounted for as work continues to tackle the blaze – with one person being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

Rosie Amies, 28, who lives opposite the block, told the Sun Online police had arrived and cordoned off the area.

She said she could see and smell the smoke billowing from the building.

She said: “I heard siren after siren pass my house so I went to the window and saw smoke covering the street.

“I had no idea what was going on so I went outside and saw flames pouring out of the roof on the building opposite.

“The police started cordoning off the road, it was chaos.

“I returned to my flat but now they’ve shut every shop on the street and aren’t letting anyone into my building.”

Thick black smoke poured out of the building as flames could be seen through the severely damaged roof.

Another witness said the roof of the building was “basically a shell” with tiles sliding from it.

In one eyewitness video taken behind the alight block violent flames and smoke billowed from a balcony as the fire took hold of the top floor flat.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 4.31pm to reports of a fire at a residential address in Turin Street, Bethnal Green.

“We have sent our Hazardous Area Response Team, two ambulance crews and an incident response officer to the scene.

“We have treated one patient at the scene and have taken them to a hospital in east London. The rest of our medics remain at the scene.”

The emergency services were alerted to the fire at 4.25pm with nearly 50 calls.

Bethnal Green Road was been closed in both directions while emergency services work.

The blaze comes after at least 79 people were killed when an inferno ripped through Grenfell Tower in West London, as emergency checks are carried out on tower blocks across the country
